—Cass McCombs,“I Went To The Hospital”
While Cass has always been, and still is, peerless and highly revered among those “who know”, his not-so-so-new Catacombs has pushed him into a little brighter spotlight, it seems. I’m no “music writer” and I couldn’t care less if you like him or not. And, honestly? I’m pretty tired. It’s been a long day. Definitely too tired to make clever/incoherent analogies about this dude’s music. Can’t I just put the newly aquired vinyl catalog on and space out for a minute or 200? That (all those excuses for not really writing jack shit) said, how about these 3 videos? Totally amazing right?
ps: I’m sorry for dropping two consecutive posts with some derivation of the word “DEAD” in the title. I’m doing just fine, thanks. Two more videos from Catacombs: “Dreams Come True Girl” and “You Saved My Life”… Positive song names, won’t you agree? Read the rest of this entry »
i came across this while listening to KEXP (live streaming here) today and i’ve listened to it over and over. i feel like a kid at the carnival. the dings and hums of this deerhoof remix send me directly to a mary poppins-esque carousel. be sure to take a listen to more of shugo tokumaru’s music here for more caramel apple and cotton candy sounds.
i’ve just moved from my foggy city by the bay into the summer sunshine of los angeles. my favorite disco nerd, derrick love, of GEMINI DISCO SF shared this song, ’sunshower’ by dr. buzzard’s original savannah band, with me and i feel like i have to share it with you. while i am really missing my foggy little town up north, i’m really feeling the summertime love in the air here in la in my breezy beach town in the southbay.

Yacht, Psychic City
As it turns out, this interview Pance and I did/shot with Jonah in April of 2007 for ‘Sup was both enlightening (acronym-wise) and, looking back, a fun, off-hand prediction of things that have since come to pass. Namely, Claire! She’s a full-fledged partner, and fully amazing, on the(ir) new album, See Mystery Lights. Love it.
Looking through a drawer the other day, I came across a printed cotton headband made by McCloud Zicmuse as a promotional item for his band Le Ton Mité. I often used to wear it at home while working. It now resembles an old pillowcase that resists immaculacy. The headband has an attached label that reads “zicmuse.com”. I decided to look up the website to see what happened to McCloud. I was surprised to find out that a pair of vintage trousers I donated to him became an art project about keeping the pants alive!
Often when friends visit me, I make an effort to donate some of my excess thrift finds appropriate for their needs or tastes. McCloud stayed here in 2003 as a guest of my former roommate, Mark Dober. I had forgotten that I gave McCloud a pair of vintage Lee olive twill work pants that were probably used by some Eagle Scout or park ranger in the 60s or 70s.

McCloud has made all sorts of repairs to them over time including the installation of new orange pocket bags for the front pockets.
I’d like to imagine that McCloud was wearing these green trousers during some of the fascinating drama he experienced playing shows in Europe in 2007 with Maher Shalal Hash Baz (Tori Kudo).
I was visiting a friend on Lake Winnipesaukee last Saturday when he started playing a guitar riff that sounded very familiar. I asked him the name of the song, and he said it was the theme from Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1960 masterpiece, L’avventura (seen & heard in video above). I suggested that it sounded very similar to Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers’Egyptian Reggae. He agreed. Now, composer Giovanni Fusco died in 1968 and The Modern Lovers formed in 1970, so they weren’t broing down in Boston, or even Italy for that matter. It is quite possible however, that a young Jonathan did see the film and fell victim to one of our implicit and ubiquitous human faults, cryptomnesia, or unintended plagiarism.
things are getting really really interesting. life-updates forthcoming. until then, enjoy your weekend with this early take of T.Rex’s “Get It On”.

I got excited last night talking to Victor about tightening up our CB slang game for texting and live conversations. Little did I know that the citizen’s band is no longer the exclusive domain of truckers and teenage hobbyists. In Sydney, Australia, the citizen’s band has been taken over by thugs!
If that’s too much for you, enjoy the grave nostalgia of Dick Curless below. If you like that one, then listen to his 1970 track “Truck Stop” about the gentrification of the greasy spoon by a “swell cafe…a brand new coffee shop.”
Wait. I thought I was done here but check out Sir Mix-a-Lot’s alter ego, Prime Minister. He broadcasts and converses regulary on Channel 6.
